{"id":893,"date":"2026-08-20T18:36:18","date_gmt":"2026-08-20T09:36:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rusutsu-sustainable.com\/?p=893"},"modified":"2026-08-20T18:36:18","modified_gmt":"2026-08-20T09:36:18","slug":"exploring-subsurface-structure-through-an-artesian-well-in-izumikawa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rusutsu-sustainable.com\/?p=893&lang=en","title":{"rendered":"Exploring Subsurface Structure Through an Artesian Well in Izumikawa"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<section class=\"wp-block-jinr-blocks-designtitle b--jinr-block b--jinr-h2rich d--h2rich-left d--h2rich-style1 d--titledesign-weight-thin d--h2rich-none js--scr-animation\" style=\"border-color:false\"><div class=\"c--h2rich-contents\"><h2 class=\"a--h2rich-maincopy d--bold ef\" style=\"color:false\"><strong>What Sand and Gravel Ejected from the Well Reveal About Groundwater<\/strong><\/h2><\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the Izumikawa area, an artesian well previously used for golf course maintenance was damaged, stopping the natural flow of water from the well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An artesian well is one in which groundwater rises to the surface under pressure without the use of a pump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We conducted a site inspection with Aqua Geo Techno Co., Ltd., the company responsible for managing and constructing the well, and discussed the condition of the existing well and plans for drilling a new one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A large amount of sand and gravel had entered the well casing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We removed the sediment from inside the well and attempted to pump water by inserting a smaller-diameter pipe into the existing casing. However, sand continued to flow out, and we were unable to obtain a sufficient volume of water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For this reason, a new well will be drilled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An examination of the sediment recovered from the well showed that it consisted mainly of coarse sand, along with small rounded gravel and pumice gravel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/rusutsu-sustainable.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image1-3-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-861\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rusutsu-sustainable.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image1-3-768x1023.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rusutsu-sustainable.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image1-3-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/rusutsu-sustainable.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image1-3-1153x1536.jpg 1153w, https:\/\/rusutsu-sustainable.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image1-3.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The construction company believes that the material may have entered the well from the backfill placed around it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, the geology around Rusutsu is known to include natural layers of sand and gravel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the sand and gravel identified in this survey originated from a natural geological layer, that layer itself may be an aquifer\u2014one that stores and transmits groundwater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By closely examining the drill cuttings and geological samples brought to the surface during the drilling of the new well, we will be able to better understand the underground layers in the Izumikawa area and the paths through which groundwater flows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is also important to determine how groundwater pressure should be measured in an artesian well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One option is to install a riser pipe to measure the water level directly.
