During the winter, heavy snowfall blankets the ski slopes at Rusutsu Resort. By the end of the season, the snow collected by grooming and snow-removal machines totals about 90,000 tons each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Much of this snow is currently discharged into nearby streams, but we are exploring ways to repurpose it as a more \u201cuseful resource.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2744\ufe0f Turning snow into cooling energy<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Technology that stores snow gathered during the winter in \u201cyukimuro\u201d snow cellars and uses it for summer air-conditioning and food preservation is gaining attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several lodging facilities in Hokkaido have already adopted this system, earning praise as a way to keep spaces comfortable while holding down electricity consumption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Rusutsu, we are also examining the feasibility of introducing this \u201csnow cooling\u201d approach, which we hope will eventually cut CO\u2082 emissions and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud83d\udeb0 Turning snow into water for practical use<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

We are also exploring a method in which the collected snow is slowly melted in large basins so the water can be reused for toilet flushing and agricultural irrigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We believe this approach will help conserve natural water resources while putting snow\u2014an abundant local asset\u2014to good use without waste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, we are developing a concept for distributing \u201cfunctional water,\u201d treated to match specific purposes, throughout the resort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For instance, by reusing appropriately treated water for air\u2011conditioning, cleaning, or plant irrigation, we see a new pathway toward realizing a circular\u2011economy resort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To advance these sustainable water\u2011reuse initiatives, we have begun exchanging ideas and assessing technologies with various companies, and we plan to proceed with pilot testing and the design of supporting frameworks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carrying nature\u2019s blessings into the future<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Snow is more than a simple \u201cwinter spectacle\u201d\u2014it holds immense promise as a local resource.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rather than \u201cdiscarding snow,\u201d we are now exploring a range of ideas and technologies to \u201cmake the most of it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By continually harnessing the power of nature, we aim to deliver a resort experience that is comfortable for everyone and connected to the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
