📊 Protecting begins with knowing what we use

Visualising Rusutsu Resort’s Resource Use and Sustainability Actions

At Rusutsu, which strives to be a resort in harmony with nature, we attach great importance to accurately understanding the resources we consume.

By making less visible environmental impacts—such as electricity, water, and CO₂—“visible” through quantification, we consider how we can become even kinder to nature and translate those insights into concrete actions.

🌍 Visualizing and reducing CO₂ emissions

  • We plan to measure and record the resort’s total CO₂ emissions and apply the findings to make daily operations and facilities more energy-efficient.
  • By introducing renewable energy sources (solar, small-scale hydropower, etc.) and utilizing carbon credits, we will lessen our impact on the planet.
  • The data will also be used for environmental reporting, educational materials, workshops, and other initiatives.

💧 Water Usage and Sustainable Water Management

  • We will measure the resort’s total water consumption—including hotels, facilities, and ski areas—on a monthly basis.
  • By keeping an eye on the balance with natural water sources, we plan to prevent overuse and introduce recharge mechanisms that restore what we take.
  • The monitoring data will be published in a format that can be used for educational tours and student research projects.

🧒 Discover and Learn: Hands-On Programs for Children

  • We plan to offer hands-on workshops themed around the roles of water and forests.
  • Participants will, for example, observe groundwater flows in a model and discover how snow transforms into water—learning “skills for living with nature” while they play.
  • These activities aim to spark the growth of the next generation of sustainability leaders.

🌲 Hands-on conservation volunteering for families

  • We plan to launch volunteer programs that allow parents and children to participate in forest restoration (thinning and tree-planting) and waterside habitat improvement.
  • By letting participants engage with nature in a playful, game-like way, we will offer a resort-based learning space where they can experience the joy of conservation.
  • Working together with local residents, we aim to create a connected style of travel that goes beyond simple sightseeing.

🧠 Creating a Sustainable Future Together with Experts and the Local Community

  • We will hold symposia and carry out on-site surveys on water-cycle and forest science in collaboration with university professors and researchers.
  • Using the collected data, we also plan to host public forums and corporate briefings that explore the region’s future.
  • Rusutsu will showcase a “co-creative nature-conservation model” that unites science, the local community, and the resort.

🌱 Rusutsu’s goal: a resort that engages with the environment

How much electricity do we use? How much water do we consume?
By turning what we “didn’t know” into what we “notice,” we can move on to “changing” it.
Believing that every step we take today will help protect the snow and forests a century from now, we will keep making our impact visible and translating insight into action.
